1940s yellow hat - Gem。This gorgeous rare red straw hat from famous milliner John Frederics has no crown, but an open circle made of yellow vinyl. Under the very large brim there is also a band of yellow vinyl with a bow at the front. The vinyl shows a bit of aging when observed up close, but it does not detract from wearing. This hat is worthy of being in a museum. Some of John Frederics\' hats are at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Label: JOHN FREDERICS - NEW YORK
Born in Germany as John Harberger in the early 1900s, he immigrated to the United States in 1919. In 1928 John entered a partnership with Frederic Hirst to form the John-Frederics label. It started with a small second story salon on Madison Avenue in New York City but quickly expanded to outlets in Palm Beach, Hollywood and several hundred department stores, becoming a multi-million dollar business by 1940. Frederics hats were famous in Hollywood, the most well-known being the straw and green velvet bonnet made for Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind in 1939. Over the course of his career, the milliner dressed the heads of celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford & Greta Garbo.
Please do not expect perfection! This is an authentic piece of fashion history! This hat is in wonderful vintage condition & has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years. Feathers, straw, furs, flowers & veils are fragile, given their age. Mannequin not for sale.
